What Is SEO? A Plain-English Guide for Contractors

7 min read · October 20, 2026

SEO stands for search engine optimization. In plain terms, it is the work of making your business show up when people search Google for what you do, in the area where you do it. For a contractor, it is the difference between a homeowner finding you or finding the company down the road.

How SEO brings in work

Think about how people hire a plumber, roofer or landscaper today. They pull out their phone, search something like "water heater repair near me", look at the map and the first few results, read a few reviews, and call. SEO is everything that gets you into that short list.

Unlike ads, you do not pay for each click. Once your pages and your Google profile rank, they keep bringing in calls month after month. That is why SEO is usually the lowest cost source of leads over time, even though it takes longer to start than ads.

The two kinds of SEO that matter for local businesses

  • Local SEO: getting into the Google Maps results. This is driven mostly by your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how close you are to the searcher.
  • Website SEO: getting your website to rank in the regular results below the map. This is driven by having clear pages for each service and area, a fast mobile-friendly site, and other sites linking to yours.

You want both. The map gets the most calls, and your website both ranks on its own and helps your map listing rank.

What good SEO looks like for a contractor

  • A separate page for each service you offer, like "drain cleaning" and "water heater installation", instead of one page that lists everything.
  • Pages for the main towns you serve, written for people in that town, not copy and paste with the city name swapped.
  • A site that loads fast on a phone, with your phone number and a quote button easy to tap.
  • A complete Google Business Profile with real photos and a steady flow of new reviews.
  • Your business name, address and phone number listed the same way everywhere online.

What SEO is not

SEO is not a trick or a one-time setup. Anyone promising you the number one spot on Google in a week is either running ads and calling it SEO, or using tactics that can get your site penalized. Real SEO is steady work that builds on itself.

What about ChatGPT and AI search?

More people now ask ChatGPT or Google's AI answers for recommendations. These tools pull from the same places Google does: your website, your reviews and what other sites say about you. Clear service pages, good reviews and consistent business details help you show up there too. Some people call this AEO, answer engine optimization, but for a local business it builds on the same foundation as SEO.

How long until SEO works?

Most local businesses start to see movement in one to three months, with stronger results in three to six months, depending on how competitive your trade and town are. The businesses that win are the ones that start early and keep going.

Do you need to do it yourself?

You can. Everything in this guide is something an owner can do. Most contractors simply do not have the time, which is why it often makes sense to have it built and maintained for you while you focus on the work. Either way, start by finding out where you stand today. Our free Google audit shows exactly that.
